Communications Toolkit

A communications strategy that carefully considers the cultural and linguistic needs of refugees, immigrants and migrants (RIM) is essential to any public health effort. Learn how to define your audience, leverage traditional and social media, crowdsource videos, and refine your messages so they not only reach the communities you serve, but remain memorable and effective.

This toolkit, created in collaboration with the International Rescue Committee, is designed to help service providers and organizations better understand the principles and practices of cultural validation and translation review. It also includes templates, tips, and case studies to aid providers who are new to the cultural validation and translation review process.

Cultural validation is the process of bilingual, bicultural community members reviewing and providing feedback on content prior to translation, to make sure materials have the best possible framing and approach for the intended audience. Materials can include print, audio, video, web content, imagery, graphics, and more.

This guide from CORE offers best practices for using social media to support newcomers. Learn how to leverage platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to share stories, raise awareness, and foster a strong sense of community around resettlement.

This is a challenging goal and involves more than asking someone, or using automated translation software, to translate word for word.
